🎤 Day 1 as a PhD Student: They Threw Me Straight Into the Deep End!
My PhD contract had barely been signed before I was sent on my first mission: presenting at the RIC Day! Talk about a warm welcome... 🔥
PhD Journey
DAY 1
of ~1095 days
RIC Day 2024
Rencontre Inria-Centrale • Lille, France
An annual event where brilliant Master's students hunt for internships and thesis topics... and where researchers like me get to show off their coolest research projects! 🧲
🤯 Wait, What Just Happened?
Picture this: It's my literal first day as a PhD student. I'm still trying to figure out where the coffee machine is. My Inria badge is so fresh it practically squeaks. And my supervisors walk up to me with that smile that says "We have a fun surprise for you..."
"Arléon, you're presenting AdaptiFlow at RIC Day. Today."
😱
No pressure, right? Just casually explain complex self-adaptive systems to a room full of brilliant students and seasoned researchers. On day one. In a language that's not my mother tongue. Easy peasy! 😅
🐸 The Glass Frog Saves the Day
Okay, so I had a secret weapon: the glass frog.
To explain why our tech systems need to self-adapt, I used the legendary face-off: 🐸 vs. 🐍 — the ultimate adaptation pro versus the sneaky predator!
"When a glass frog senses danger, it doesn't panic. It becomes transparent. It adapts to survive. Our cloud systems should do the same."
I demonstrated how AdaptiFlow brings this natural adaptation behavior to cloud microservices. And you know what? It clicked! ✨
Those "Aha!" Moments
Seeing those "Aha! ✨" moments in the students' eyes was absolutely priceless. That instant when a complex concept suddenly makes sense. When the analogy lands perfectly. When someone nods and you can see they get it.
That's the magic of teaching. That's why I do this.
🍒 The Cherry on Top
But wait, there's more! The day got even better.
I got to chat with experts like Professor Philippe Merle — yes, THE Philippe Merle, creator of the awesome KubeDiagrams! Getting to discuss cloud architectures with someone of his caliber? On my first day? Pinch me. 🤩
💡 What I Presented
AdaptiFlow Framework
Event-driven autonomy for cloud microservices
MAPE-K Loop Implementation
Monitor, Analyze, Plan, Execute — with Knowledge
Nature-Inspired Adaptation
Learning from the glass frog's survival strategy
📝 Lessons from Day 1
What did I learn from being thrown into the deep end?
- Analogies are powerful. Complex concepts become accessible when you connect them to nature.
- Preparation beats perfection. I wasn't "ready" — but I knew my material well enough to adapt.
- The PhD community is welcoming. Everyone was supportive, curious, and genuinely interested.
- Nerves are fuel. That adrenaline? Channel it into energy and enthusiasm.
🚀 The Journey Begins
An inspiring start to say the least!
This doctoral journey is already off to a thrilling run. If Day 1 is any indication, the next three years are going to be one heck of an adventure. 🎢
To everyone who attended RIC Day and asked questions, offered encouragement, or simply nodded along — thank you. You made my first day unforgettable.
Let's see what Day 2 brings! 💪
